30 July 2021
In the framework of the project Managing Biodiversity to Increase Returns from Landscape Investments: Value Chains for Local Crop Varieties, focusing on Durum Wheat (AGREED Ethiopia), financed by the World Bank and implemented by Bioversity International and CIHEAM Bari, a study tour for a delegation of Ethiopian authorities was organized from 25 to 30 July 2021.

Members of the delegation were representatives from Bioversity International and Ethiopian institutions such as the Ministries of Agriculture, of Trade and Industry, Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute, the Green Innovation Center of GIZ along with private pasta factories managers.

The study tour was designed to gain knowledge on Italian durum wheat infrastructure and value chain and define strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for the Ethiopian value chain and processing plans. Good practices were illustrated to the Ethiopian delegation in Puglia region, namely Perniola Alimenti (Rutigliano), Il Mastro Pastaio (Palo del Colle), Andriani (Gravina di Puglia), CREA-Cereal Department (Foggia), CNR-Gene bank (Bari). Topic of the visits was durum wheat value chain, in terms of scientific research and seeds characterisation, processing and marketing in order to focus on the important role they play in the Italian agriculture and how the value chain is structured.

A final workshop closed the visit where participants discussed the results of the project’s activities and further developments of durum wheat value chain in Ethiopia.
