In the framework of the "Institutional strengthening of the Albanian Ministry of Agriculture for food safety management - SAFIAL" project, funded by the Italian Cooperation and implemented in collaboration with the CIHEAM Bari (Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari), two Albanian specialists of ISUV (Institute of food safety and veterinary of Albanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) are attending training course in CIHEAM Bari to increase their knowledge on plant quarantine diagnostic tools and analysis.
Training course are focused on: “Morphological and molecular assays to detect and identify fungal and bacterial pathogens” and on “Biological, serological and molecular assays for the detection of plant viruses”.
SAFIAL project, during a period of 3 years, is focusing on strengthening the capacity of Albanian institutions to perform inspection on foodstuffs entering Durres Port to improve assessment and analysis of the health level of food of plant origin and plant quarantine and to strengthen the performance of the national veterinary service.
This applied training course is a very relevant tool to strength the phytosanitary laboratory as much as it is the purchasing of new equipment, furnishings, and consumables. Specialists being trained and updated through ‘learning-by-doing’, ‘training on-the-job’ and field-visits are increasing their experiences and skills becoming added value for the Albanian institutional system of food safety.
