«Organic agriculture is a tool for the socio-political and economic development, it could increase the accessibility of local products to international markets, promote food safety, strengthen the environmental sustainability of agricultural production, promote the employment of youth and enhance women entrepreneurs». These are the words that the Director of CIHEAM Bari, Maurizio Raeli, said in his greeting speech to the participants of the 10th MOAN meeting, held in Beirut last November 5th.
The Director pointed out that there is a great potential for the organic farming sector at national level in Lebanon and that the linking of organic farming with quality schemes could also be transferred to traditional food.
Raeli, furthermore, underlined how CIHEAM Bari has carried out numerous training and cooperation activities and institutional interventions for the organic agriculture sector in Lebanon, including the training of more than 30 Lebanese students in the framework of the Master of Science in organic farming in the Mediterranean. The Institute of Bari, moreover, has supported 8 doctoral theses of young Lebanese researchers and currently provides support for organic and agri-food products typical of the TiBioMED project funded, this year, by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture with the involvement of Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
